where to eat in tagaytay

The first volley on what eventually would be known as a gastronomic staycation (Gonzales, 2017) was our uber-late dinner over at the Lobby Lounge. As previously mentioned here, eight of my favorite people and I braved the atrocious (to the point it was laughable) weekend traffic with nothing but a few bags of chips and two dozens of donuts.

We were supposed to have dinner upon arrival at the Taal Vista Hotel – our home for that weekend – but our meal could be considered more of an almost-midnight snack.

The Lobby Lounge is one of Taal Vista Hotel's three in-house restaurants. It's located just after the hotel front desk and doubles as, you guessed it, the waiting area. Decorated with elaborate chandeliers, comfortable lounge chairs, and a convincing mock-fireplace, the restaurant best displays the hotel's Tudor inspiration.

The floor-to-ceiling glass windows let ample natural light while also affording an arresting view of the gardens, and the Taal Lake in the distance.

For appetizers, we had the Crispy Taal Lake Tawilis (Php300). Tawilis is the only known sardine to entirely exist in fresh water, and it is exclusively found in Lake Taal. The Lobby Lounge's take on this prized product involves deep frying it in light breading and pairing it with some crispy kangkong. My friends said they had better, but I really have no standard when it comes to tawilis and I just thought it was a nice way to prep our palate for the next dishes. There was also Deep Fried Calamari (Php370) that came with spicy tomato and tartar sauces, but I didn't try it because, you know, allergies.

We also got Buffalo Chicken Wings (Php280). It's paired with a blue cheese dip and some strips of celery. It tasted okay, to be honest, but then we finished everything so there's that.

Then, we had a couple of pizzas. The Quattro Stagioni (Php540) with homemade smoked ham, mushrooms, artichokes, olives, oregano, and tomato sauce looked rather unappealing but the ham part tasted pretty decent. The Quattro Formaggi (Php790) or four-cheese pizza – the four cheese being gorgonzola, mozzarella, parmesan, and fortuna – was a tad sharp and dry, but it kinda grew on us. All was gone in a matter of minutes.

Lobby Lounge also has a kid's menu and our five-year-old opted for a Fried Rice with Breaded Pork (Php340)

On our second night, we were able to sample a couple of the sandwich items. The Classic Burger (Php410) that has an Angus beef patty, bacon, and cheddar cheese was large and could probably feed two people. It was decent, the bacon making it super nice. It also came with a heap of French Fries.

Then there's the Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Homemade Tomato Sauce (Php350). The taste was nothing fancy but it was very comforting. Can't go wrong with a classic pair.

The dish we all loved was the restaurant's take on Lumpiang Sariwa (Php220). I had to take allergy meds though as this dish has shrimps and I didn't have the foresight to ask (or read the menu thoroughly).

Lobby Lounge also serves an array of drinks from wines, champagnes, cocktails, and beers to sodas and fresh juices and fruit shakes.

The food is served within a reasonable amount of time and the food is still warm when it reached our table.

The Lobby Lounge also holds regular acoustic sessions in the evening, making dining here a feast for both the stomach and the ears.

Like the rest of Taal Vista's restaurants, the Lobby Lounge is open even to non-hotel guests. Again, the price would constitute as splurging but, you know, once in a while, yes?
