agal-agal festival 2017

Tawi-Tawi is full of surprises, but more than its fair share of natural wonders, the province is determined to showcase its heritage every chance it gets. As evidenced by the recently concluded week-long celebration held in the town of Languyan, Tawi-Tawi proves to be both a treasure trove of incredible landscapes and a melting pot of vibrant culture.

This year, the merrymaking took place from September 21 to 27. The said festivities were for the 44th Kamahardikaan Sin Tawi-Tawi, or the 44th founding anniversary of the province. The Kamahardikaan leads to the Agal-Agal Festival on the 25th – a celebration in honor of the province's most valued product: agal-agal or seaweed.

A street parade with contingents from the province's municipalities signaled the beginning of the festival. It then lead into a "showdown" among the participants, with the top 3 winners going home with 1 million pesos each. The municipalities of Simunul, Sapa-Sapa, and Bongao, with their meticulous and well-thought out performances, claimed victory.

This event only proves that Tawi-Tawi is a veritable tourist destination. The practices here may be different from the rest of the country, but that's what makes it all the more special. While, sometimes, the stereotypes are true, and the stigma well-founded, in the case of Tawi-Tawi, the long journey is very much worth it.
