A Song for My Mama: Onwards

Sunday, May 25, 2014

It's been exactly one hundred and thirty two days since my mom had passed away. Days after the Sorrow, as a way of coping, I wrote a song.

May 15, 2014 was the day my mom was supposed to celebrate her sixtieth birthday. And last May 17, we held a tribute celebration for her. I finally got to perform this song live.

So, Mama, this one is for you. I know you are listening.

Onwards

So many things were said
And so much more remained in our heads
And in our hearts there's now a hole
An aching sadness deep down our souls

All the bitterness, all the harshness, all the blame
We now regret and it's such a shame
That no longer could we make you see
You are the best there could ever be

Something shattered like brittle bones
When we realized you're not coming home
This delivered endless blows
To all we believe, to all we know

This sorrow crushes us beneath
We leave our heavy hearts to bleed
We cry a storm to help us breathe
But we know you'd want us to proceed

So onwards we go
Onwards we'll carry
The whispers of your words
And handfuls of your memory
Onwards we go
Onwards we'll carry

You're too kind to a fault
Always a helping hand, always a hand to hold
You always went out your way
To help someone find better days

All the happiness you left in our lives
We cling to it in order to survive
'Coz all you did you did for love
And knowing that is more than enough

This sorrow had crushed us beneath
We've left our heavy hearts to bleed
We've cried a storm to help us breathe
But we know you'd want us to proceed

So onwards we go
Onwards we'll carry
The whispers of your words
And handfuls of your memory
Onwards we go
Onwards we'll carry

Onwards we go
Onwards we'll carry
The whispers of your words
And handfuls of your memory
Onwards we go
Onwards we'll carry

  1. Hi Celine,
I know making music and drawing art from what you see and feel is your gift. It always comes from you naturally because you are born with it. You are making your mom proud every single second, every day. Thank you for always sharing these to us, to the people who you inspire and who believes in you. You are right when you say that you are phenomenal.

About the song, I am moved. And not just by the words but of your voice. I hear you and I feel you. I most especially like the 3rd stanza. And I like the melody you created on the chorus. I know this comment will sound all too poetic but I like that you made the words and melody hopeful and accepting. That’s how I’ve listened and heard it. And your song for me completes the whole experience of being in sorrow and trying to endure it.

We have a lot of catching up to do. I’ll see you soon. I love you and Take care always.

    Love,
    French Fries
