wander space maginhawa review

Our weekend gastronomic staycation did not end at Tagaytay. After coursing through the slightly lighter traffic of Manila, we found ourselves in Maginhawa, in a gem of a cafe called The Wander Space.

THE PLACE
Located in the popular Eat Street that is Maginhawa, The Wander Space is a cafe and knickknack store in one. Owned by a team of seasoned travelers, the cafe is festooned with vagabonding-related decor and wanderlust-inspiring posters. On one corner, a slew of dream-catchers hover above a teeny tepee. Very gypsyesque.

There's also a section dedicated to homegrown brands that sell shirts, accessories, and other interesting thingamabobs. There are also travel essentials like beach blankets and headwear. I especially love Nikita – a brand that makes these beautiful handmade Bohemian jewelry.

Further is this homey nook that looks like a hippie's hideout. Throw pillows are strewn on the floor and low tables are arranged haphazardly. On a wall, the motto of "Life" (aka all travelers' creed) as made popular by the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is painted in elegant calligraphy.

The interiors and the vibe the place gave off already made it a winner for me, to be honest.

THE FOOD
But The Wander Space is, first and foremost, a cafe so we wasted no time sampling some of the items on the menu.

We started with the Classic Lasagna (Php250). Served on a crate re-purposed as a tray, the portion was big. It was meaty and yummy and tasted like my childhood. I loved it!

An order of lasagna comes with Iced Cacao Tea but it ran out when we visited so we were served Iced Dark Chocolate (Php179) instead. We also got to try their take on the classic hot chocolate and it was the best thing ever. It had melted marshmallows in it! You can get it with a serving of Parmesan Ensaymada (Php185). The two goes well perfectly, I bet.

Next, we had the Solo Pizza (Php210). It's a 6-inch thin-crust pizza with homemade marinara sauce topped with ground beef and an assortment of veggies plus a sprinkling of cheddar cheese. I was feeling a little full from the lasagna but the pizza was so good I couldn't say no.

And for the grand finale, we each were served a couple of Regiano Sticky Bun (Php195). I can't explain this dish. It simply was delicious and I would definitely go back for more.

THE SERVICE
The Wanderspace is what I imagine a hostel would feel like. There's a very laid-back vibe to it, almost communal. Probably because every person who comes here shares a great love for adventures and awesome experiences. The food is great. The place I – forgive me for using this term – Instagrammable. The items for sale quirky but practical.

On top of that, the Wander Space also holds regular learning sessions that teach life skills while also encouraging creativity. Photography workshops, CV-writing, and calligraphy lessons are some of the activities held here. You can check out their Facebook page for upcoming events.

BOTTOMLINE
I'll definitely bring my closest friends here soon. I love its concept. The menu might be simple but it works. I'll be coming back here again and again.
